Gary Taylor's leadership in developing the Michigan Department of Transportation's (MDOT) "Give ‘em a Brake" work zone safety program brought statewide attention to safety issues faced by road construction workers. Taylor retired from MDOT in 2002, after a 31-year career that began as a construction engineer and ended as chief engineer and deputy director of the Bureau of Highways. At MDOT, he played a significant role in the critical oversight and fabrication of the Zilwaukee Bridge, the creation of the Intelligent Transportation Society of Michigan (ITS Michigan), and received the CIO Enterprise Award for his work developing FieldManager, a software suite used to manage highway construction projects. Taylor served on or chaired many committees for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and the national Transportation Research Board, giving Michigan a national presence and a voice in policy changes. Throughout his career, he was a role model for engineers and transportation officials in Michigan and nationally.
