Fast facts:
- Rebuilding of the Capital Avenue bridge over I-94 in Battle Creek still is expected to be completed by Sept. 23, but the closure is being extended to Sept. 30 to rebuild the westbound I-94 ramps.
- The original schedule would have seen one lane of Capital Avenue reopen in each direction on Sept. 23 and the westbound ramps closed for an additional six to eight weeks for rebuilding.
- By extending the Capital Avenue closure one week, the contractor is planning to rebuild the westbound ramps in two weeks, starting Sept. 18.
MARSHALL, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is on schedule to finish rebuilding the Capital Avenue bridge over I-94 in Battle Creek by Saturday, Sept. 23. However, the bridge closure is being extended one week, through Saturday, Sept. 30, to complete rebuilding the westbound I-94 ramps at Capital Avenue.
Work to rebuild the westbound ramps will start Monday, Sept. 18, and is expected to be completed Saturday, Sept. 30. The original schedule called for the bridge to reopen one lane in each direction on Sept. 23, with the westbound ramps to be closed for another six to eight weeks for rebuilding. By extending the bridge closure for one week, the westbound ramp closure will be reduced by more than a month.
The following detours will be posted for Capital Avenue:
- Northbound traffic will be detoured on eastbound Beckley Road, northbound I-194/M-66, and westbound M-96 (Columbia Avenue).
- Southbound traffic will be detoured on westbound Knapp Drive, northbound Minges Road, westbound Watkins Road, southbound Helmer Road, and eastbound I-94.
The following ramp detours will be in place:
- The westbound I-94 ramp to northbound Capital Avenue will be detoured on northbound I-194/M-66 and westbound M-96 (Columbia Avenue).
- The westbound I-94 ramp to southbound Capital Avenue will be detoured on southbound I-194/M-66 to westbound Beckley Road.
- The Capital Avenue ramp to westbound I-94 will be detoured on westbound Knapp Drive, northbound Minges Road, westbound Watkins Road, and southbound Helmer Road.
The eastbound I-94 ramps will be repaved after the work is completed on the westbound ramps. The exact dates of the nighttime work will be shared as soon as they are determined.
A pedestrian detour will be posted on Beckley Road, Riverside Drive, and Minges Road. A shuttle service is available, and Battle Creek Transit has service changes during the work. For more information, visit the City of Battle Creek website.
This work is part of MDOT’s three-year, $160 million project to repave 10 miles of I-94 between Helmer Road and 17 1/2 Mile Road, rebuild nine bridges, and repair six others. Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support nearly 2,032 jobs.
