MDOT lifting traffic restrictions to ease expected record Independence Day travel
June 30, 2025
Fast facts:
- MDOT is suspending work and lifting traffic restrictions wherever possible this holiday weekend to ease congestion and increase safety (110 out of 179 projects).
- AAA estimates more than 2.6 million Michigan residents are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home during the Independence Day holiday weekend, a new record.
- Although some equipment and traffic configurations will remain over the weekend, suspending construction operations improves safety for workers and motorists.
- Remember to buckle up, stay alert and avoid distractions at all times when driving.
LANSING, Mich. - With summer travel in full swing heading into the Independence Day holiday weekend, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is removing lane restrictions on 61 percent of its road and bridge projects statewide to ease traffic delays for holiday travelers. AAA estimates more than 2.6 million Michigan residents are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home during the Independence Day holiday weekend, up 3 percent from last year, a new record.
"Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely," said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. "By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs without raising taxes by a dime. This year, let's build on our momentum to pass a bipartisan local road funding plan so we can keep fixing our damn roads and creating good-paying, local jobs."
"So much needed road and bridge work continues across Michigan, including projects made possible by Gov. Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan program and the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law," said State Transportation Director Bradley C. Wieferich. "The men and women of MDOT know how frustrating work zones can be; we drive the same roads as everyone else. Road workers and the ones you love are all counting on you to drive safely through those work zones so everyone makes it home every night. While we've been able to pull back the barrels as much as possible on state road projects for this record holiday weekend, some work zones require all the barrels to remain in place for safety reasons."
Director Wieferich also reminds the public that MDOT is not sending text messages to anyone demanding toll payments. This is a scam. MDOT does not operate any toll roads; messages should be ignored and deleted immediately. Anyone who has tried sending payment information to these messages should contact their financial institution immediately.
Beginning at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 3, and continuing until 6 a.m. Monday, July 7, 110 out of 179 projects statewide will have lane restrictions removed. While motorists will see suspended operations in most MDOT work zones for the weekend, drivers are advised that equipment and certain traffic configurations may remain in place, like temporary shifts or shoulder closures.
MDOT oversees I, M and US routes and is responsible for nearly 10,000 miles of state highways, which carry more than 50 percent of all traffic and approximately 70 percent of commercial traffic in Michigan.
The following is a list of work zones that will remain active or have lane restrictions during Independence Day weekend. If necessary, detour routes will be posted at the project location. All closures are subject to change. For the most up-to-date information on MDOT projects, go to the Mi Drive website at www.Michigan.gov/Drive.
