Temporary speed limit to be enforced at US-141 Iron County bridge project

COVINGTON, Mich. - Work on US-141 over the East Branch of the Net River in Iron County will require a temporary posted speed limit of 25 mph at the bridge later this week.

Law enforcement will be present at the bridge and will be strictly enforcing the new speed limit, which goes into effect at 1 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15, and is expected to continue until 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19. Traffic fines are doubled in work zones.

The work is weather dependent and this schedule is subject to change.

The speed limit reduction is being implemented in lieu of an extensive detour. The reduction is needed to successfully complete deck pouring, part of a $4.9 million Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) investment to rebuild four bridges in Iron and Ontonagon counties.

One alternating lane will remain open at the bridge during work using temporary traffic signals. A 10-foot width restriction will remain in place at the bridge.

This will be the first of two separate speed limit reductions necessary during project stages. When the schedule for the second reduction is set, MDOT will notify the public.

This work will extend the lifespan of the bridge and result in a smoother driving surface and increased safety for motorists.
