M-30 permanent bridge construction begins March 4 over the Tobacco River in Gladwin County
February 23, 2024
MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - MDOT will begin an approximately $12.4 million investment to build a permanent three-span bridge on M-30 over the Tobacco River in Gladwin County to replace the temporary bridge installed following the Edenville dam breach in May 2020.
County:
Gladwin
Highway:
M-30
Closest cities:
Edenville
Start date:
Monday, March 4, 2024
Estimated end date:
Friday, Oct. 11, 2024
Traffic restrictions:
During construction, the bridge will be closed with detoured via Curtis Road to M-18, then Dale Road back to M-30. Trucks will be detoured via US-10 to M-18, then M-61 back to M-30.
Job numbers:
Based on economic modeling, this $12.4 million investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 176 jobs.
Safety benefit:
As a result of flooding and the Edenville dam breach in May 2020, the M-30 causeway bridge near Stryker’s Marina was washed away. To restore mobility quickly, MDOT staff installed a temporary bridge that opened to traffic in March 2021. The temporary bridge will be removed and a new permanent bridge will be built in its place.
