Bottled drinking water is regulated within the Michigan Food Law of 2000 and defined in the Michigan Safe Drinking Water Act 399 of 1976, § 325.1017 and 21 CFR part 129, which relate to how, whom and what is regulated during the production of bottled drinking water.
Source approval must be obtained from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) prior to manufacturing and/or selling bottled water (517-284-6527). Please see the Application for State of Michigan Bottled Water Source Approval.
Water bottlers are required by the Michigan Food Law to test the water that is bottled and containers that are used according to 21 CFR part 165 and 21 CFR part 129.
Registration: Two types of registration are outlined in the Michigan Food Law section 289.4115 for 1) bottled water manufacturers and 2) water-dispensing machines. Information and the applications can be found on MDARD’s bottled water web page.
