Wholesale Manufactured Foods New Business Guide
Meat Products
The USDA’s, Food Safety and Inspection Service, has jurisdiction over amenable meats from cattle, sheep, swine, goats, horses, mules, and other equines; poultry (chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, ratites, squabs); catfish (Siluriform species) and consumer labeling, storage and transportation of shell eggs.
Some meat production plants will require permits from both the USDA and MDARD because the USDA regulates only a select set of food products. If your manufacturing firm produces meat products and other items that do not contain meat, you will be open to inspection and permitting by both agencies.
