Background:
Michigan is committed to improving safety, mobility and accessibility for pedestrians and bicyclists, who are considered vulnerable road users (VRUs) and face greater risk of injury and fatality when involved in a crash due to lack of physical protection. As part of its transition to the human-centered Safe System Approach, and in response to federal requirements of the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), MDOT completed the state’s first VRUSA in 2023, supporting the Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) goal of eliminating fatalities and serious injuries on Michigan roadways by 2050.
These virtual meetings will provide an overview of VRU safety trends while inviting community members and stakeholders to share feedback regarding local safety concerns, priorities and potential solutions for pedestrians and bicyclists across Michigan communities. Input gathered will help identify future safety strategies, outreach and transportation initiatives across the state and support development of the 2027-2030 VRUSA.
