August 09, 2023
LANSING, Mich. - Starting on Aug. 9, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will close the Michigan Line rail corridor to train traffic in Jackson to allow crews to safely replace two century-old railroad bridges over Jackson and Mechanic streets.
It is estimated that the Jackson Street Bridge will be replaced on the evening of Aug. 11 while the Mechanic Street Bridge will be replaced on the morning of Aug. 12. Area residents can expect more noise and bright lights in the evening.

Overall project completion date:
Saturday, Sept. 30, 2023
Jackson, Mechanic, Detroit, and Van Buren streets will remain closed through the end of the project. Motorists should follow the posted detours. Blackstone Street will be temporarily closed and reopen on Aug. 15.
Amtrak Wolverine Service trains that operate between Chicago and Detroit/Pontiac will start and terminate at Battle Creek. Limited connecting bus service will be provided between Battle Creek and Pontiac. Please see the Amtrak Passenger Service Notice website for more information.
Replacing these bridges will ensure smooth and safe railroad operations while maintaining this vital part of the state's economy. Closing streets during this type of work is necessary to provide the safest work area possible for work crews and motorists.
