MDOT seeking public comment on I-475 bridge over S. Grand Traverse Street in Flint
May 29, 2025
DAVISON, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is inviting the public to provide their feedback online now through Tuesday, June 10, on a proposed property acquisition from the City of Flint on I-475 near S. Grand Traverse Street in Flint. The proposed property acquisition (part of the former railroad right of way) is approximately 1.6 acres and would accommodate the building of a new I-475 bridge over the roadway.
Funding for this project is made possible by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan program to rebuild the state highways and bridges that are critical to the state's economy and carry the most traffic. The investment strategy is aimed at fixes that result in longer useful lives and improves the condition of the state's infrastructure.

Project information:
This acquisition of the proposed property is being proposed to accommodate the building of a new I-475 bridge over S. Grand Traverse Street and the former railroad property. This span would be about 200 feet shorter than the existing structure, reducing construction costs of the replacement bridge as well as bridge maintenance costs over the life of the structure. The northern portion of the existing bridge will be filled with embankment. This new construction would result in a slight realignment of the future Grand Traverse Greenway Trail south of the new bridge abutment.
MDOT is proposing enhanced pedestrian lighting under the bridge to provide better visibility and a safer feel once the proposed trail is built.
The construction of this new span is part of the I-475 middle and south segment improvements scheduled for 2026 and 2027. MDOT has secured approximately $271 million in funding for safety improvements and roadway rebuilding from Bristol Road north to the Flint River.
Public input is being accepted now to help recognize and address any concerns that may result from any impacts on the adjacent properties per a proposed de minimis impact finding under Section 4(f) of U.S. Department of Transportation Act of 1966.
Please submit public comments by Tuesday, June 10, using the online comment form or by mail, email or phone to MDOT Public Involvement Specialist and Hearings Officer Monica Monsma at MonsmaM@Michigan.gov or:
