In Michigan, there are three publicly-owned and operated bridges: Mackinac Bridge, Blue Water Bridge, and International Bridge. There are also two privately-owned and operated border crossings: Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.

MARSHALL, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is expecting to reopen the Capital Avenue bridge over I-94, including the westbound ramps, in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, on Saturday, Sept. 30.
Right on schedule, MDOT contractors Anlaan Corp., Hoffman Bros., Inc,. and C.A. Hull are completing the new Capital Avenue bridge over I-94 and rebuilding the westbound ramps. Originally closed on July 7, the bridge rebuilding project was extended by a week to include rebuilding the ramps, eliminating the need to limit Capital Avenue traffic and close the ramps for an additional six to eight weeks.
With the bridge and ramps reopening tomorrow, there is some remaining work on Capital Avenue, but much of that work will be completed without an impact on traffic. Crews will be doing restoration and traffic signal work, as well as installing decorative fencing.
This work is part of MDOT’s three-year, $160 million project to repave 10 miles of I-94 between Helmer Road and 17 1/2 Mile Road, rebuild nine bridges, and repair six others. Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support nearly 2,032 jobs.
For the rest of the 2023 construction season, crews will be completing westbound I-94 bridge rebuilding at 6 1/2 Mile Road, Beadle Lake Road, 9 Mile Road, and the Kalamazoo River, as well as bridge painting at I-194/M-66 and bridge approach work at 17 Mile Road.
In 2024, crews’ attention will shift to rebuilding the eastbound I-94 bridges at 6 1/2 Mile Road, Beadle Lake Road, 9 Mile Road, and the Kalamazoo River. Bridge painting will be completed at I-194/M-66, F Drive North, and 17 Mile Road. Eastbound I-94 will be repaved from west of Helmer Road to 6 1/2 Mile Road, from 9 Mile Road to the Kalamazoo River, and from I-69 to west of 17 1/2 Mile Road. Westbound I-94 will be repaved from west of 17 1/2 Mile Road to I-69, and from the Kalamazoo River to 9 Mile Road.
