Work on US-41 M-28 roundabout project in Ishpeming to resume soon

ISHPEMING, Mich. - Work on the roundabout at the intersection of US-41/M-28 and Lakeshore Drive in Ishpeming is expected to resume later this month.

Preliminary work is expected to begin in the second half of March, with preparations for a traffic shift, lane reductions and detour. Work on the intersection is expected to begin around April 1, weather permitting. At that time, last year’s detour of North Lakeshore Drive will be reinstated and temporary traffic signals at the intersection of US-41/M-28 and Country Lane will be re-activated.

For this year’s first phase of construction, expected to last until early to mid-July, all traffic will be shifted to the south side of US-41/M-28, with one lane in each direction and a center left-turn lane for westbound traffic at Lakeshore Drive.

During the project, a minimum of one lane will be open in each direction on US-41/M-28. Additional local traffic detours will be required during future phases.

In September 2023, MDOT began work on this $6.4 million roundabout investment. Work includes asphalt rebuilding, drainage, guardrail, retaining walls, lighting, signs, pavement markings, bridge widening with steel beams, deck replacement, bridge barrier construction, and approach work. Work was paused for the winter, with overall project completion scheduled for late October.

Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 91 jobs.

This project is expected to improve safety and traffic flow in the area. Learn more about the benefits of roundabouts on the MDOT website.
