LANSING, Mich. - In an effort to make M-99 (Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. Boulevard) safer and more efficient for pedestrians, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is launching a pedestrian island project.
MDOT, in partnership with the City of Lansing and the South Martin Luther King Jr. Corridor Improvement Authority, will be installing four pedestrian islands on MLK Jr. Boulevard between Victor Avenue and Cavanaugh Road in Lansing. These pedestrian islands will reduce the distance between designated pedestrian crossings in the corridor and provide a refuge space to allow pedestrians to focus on one direction of traffic at a time when crossing the five-lane roadway.
"This traffic calming project on MLK is the result of years of conversations with MDOT and local partners, spanning back to my early days serving as Lansing's state representative. Reckless speeding along our busy corridors and in our neighborhoods continues to be one of the most common concerns I hear from community members," said Senate Appropriations Chairwoman Sarah Anthony. “Lansing’s MLK Jr. Boulevard is an integral part of our city, spanning numerous homes, businesses, and community centers. By prioritizing creative and strategic approaches, like pedestrian islands, we can create a safer, more livable community for everyone.”
"This project is an excellent opportunity for our agencies to work together with the shared goal of making the Lansing community a safer place for pedestrians," added MDOT University Region Engineer Greg Losch.
Bids are expected to be received this October with all work completed in fall 2025.
