COLOMA, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), in partnership with contractors Rieth Riley Construction, Kalin Construction, and Milbocker & Sons Inc., will resume on Thursday, Feb. 6, work on the three-year, $204 million investment in I-94 in Berrien County.
Work started in 2024 to rebuild I-94 between Puetz Road and Washington Avenue, as well as the Exit 23 Red Arrow Highway interchange; that work will be completed in June. The westbound I-94 ramp to Red Arrow Highway will be closed starting Thursday, and the posted detour will use Exit 22 John Beers Road.
Work to rebuild westbound I-94 between Britain Avenue and Washington Avenue will begin in early March. Two lanes of I-94 will be open in each direction during this work, and there will be several ramp closures and intermittent local road closures. As part of the I-94 rebuilding project, crews will be building sound abatement barriers, installing cable guardrail, building culverts and improving drainage, and installing new signs.
Starting Tuesday, March 11, MDOT will close and detour the following ramps:
- Westbound I-94 Exit 30 to Napier Avenue. Detour posted on southbound US-31 and Napier Avenue.
- Napier Avenue entrance ramp to westbound I-94. Detour posted on Napier Avenue and M-139.
- Pipestone Road entrance ramp to westbound I-94. Detour posted on Nickerson Avenue and M-139.
- Westbound I-94 Exit 27 to Niles Avenue. Detour posted on M-139.
- Niles Avenue entrance ramp to westbound I-94. Detour posted on M-63 and M-139.
Non-highway closures in 2025 will include Pipestone Road and Lincoln Avenue during bridge demolition and rebuilding. The dates of those closures and posted detours will be shared when the contractor schedules each of those phases.
Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 2,911 jobs.
Funding for this three-year, $205 million investment is made possible by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan program to rebuild the state highways and bridges that are critical to the state's economy and carry the most traffic. The investment strategy is aimed at fixes that result in longer useful lives and improve the condition of the state's infrastructure.
