LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announces $133 million in funding from the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) Low or No Emission Grant Program and Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Program, as well as, matching state funds that will help modernize Michigan’s bus infrastructure, reduce traffic congestion, and help people travel more efficiently and affordably.
“These competitive grants strengthen Michigan’s thriving intermodal transportation network connecting our communities,” said Jean Ruestman, administrator of the MDOT Office of Passenger Transportation. “Both grant programs have innumerable positive social and economic impacts ranging from improving mobility to advancing green innovation in public transit. These programs are crucial to cultivating equitable access to clean transportation for all Michiganders.”
“Cadillac/Wexford Transit Authority is honored to receive this grant, which represents a transformative investment in public transportation for our rural community,” said Executive Director Carrie Thompson. “These funds will allow us to expand our bus garage to properly house our fleet, construct a dedicated wash bay to extend the useful life of our vehicles, and install a generator to ensure we can serve as a reliable partner in the county’s emergency management plans as an emergency shelter. The project will also create much-needed office space to support our growing operations, and the grant will allow us to purchase 14 new vehicles to continue meeting increasing demand. This investment comes at a historic moment for WexExpress. This October we celebrated the highest monthly ridership in our transit’s history, providing more than 15,000 rides in a single month. We are grateful for the state’s support as we work to strengthen mobility, safety, and service for the people of Wexford County.”
Michigan is one of the few states compelled by law to provide a portion of the match funds for the grant required by the FTA. Michigan is able to exceed the base state level statutory requirement and support 100 percent of the local match from the state Comprehensive Transportation Fund (CTF). This structure significantly reduces the financial burden on transit agencies and enhances their competitiveness in national funding opportunities, ultimately enabling more robust and equitable transit service across the state.
