DETROIT, Mich. - Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contractors are continuing work on a new storm sewer for I-375 in Detroit. As part of this work, crews will close Atwater Street between St. Antoine and Rivard streets on Monday, Oct. 20. Traffic will be detoured using St. Antoine Rivard and Woodbridge streets for each direction.
The installation of the new drainage outfall system requires Schweizer Place to remain closed between Woodbridge and Atwater streets until early June 2026. Initial work began Monday, Oct. 13. Crews waited to close Atwater Street until Oct. 20 to accommodate the required staging area for the Detroit Free Press Marathon.
Initially, this work will have no impact on the Riverwalk. Starting late this year and ending in early April 2026, the Riverwalk will close at Schweizer Place. Beforehand, crews will restore a portion of Atwater Street to accommodate pedestrians between Rivard and Beaubien streets, and bicyclists between Bates and Riopelle streets. Atwater Street will remain closed to vehicular traffic until April 2026.
The new storm sewer will provide lasting environmental benefits for residents and businesses along I-375 and the riverfront. The new storm sewer will support cleaner water being discharged into the Detroit River and relieve pressure on the existing city combined sewer system after heavy rain events, reducing the risk of flooding on streets and in neighborhoods.
