Portion of the Riverwalk closing Thursday, Nov. 20 for ongoing utility improvements for I-375

Fast facts:

  •   MDOT is currently moving forward with construction of a new storm sewer outfall at the Detroit riverfront.
  •   Work progress requires closing a portion of the Detroit Riverwalk to install an underground drainage system from Atwater Street to the Detroit River.
  •   This independent upgrade provides environmental benefits for residential and business communities adjacent to I-375 and the riverfront.

DETROIT, Mich. – Weather permitting, work crews will extend the current installation of a new storm sewer along Schweizer Place down to the riverfront starting Thursday, Nov. 20. This work will require closing a portion of the Detroit Riverwalk between Beaubien and Rivard streets. During the closure, pedestrians and cyclists will be detoured to Atwater Street.

The Atwater detour will be in place until mid-December. Afterwards, pedestrians and cyclists will use Franklin Street until the Riverwalk opens. Ongoing installation work requires Schweizer Place to remain closed between Woodbridge and Atwater streets. The affected portion of the Riverwalk and Schweizer Place will open in spring 2026.

The new storm sewer will provide lasting environmental benefits for residents and businesses along the I-375 corridor and the riverfront, by supporting cleaner water being discharged into the Detroit River and relieving pressure on the existing city combined sewer system after heavy rain events. The installation of the new storm sewer will reduce the risk of flooding on streets and in neighborhoods.
