Michigan Passenger Rail Future
Michigan Passenger Rail Future
On track for the future
MDOT is undertaking four service development plans (SDPs) as part of its efforts to enhance passenger rail services in Michigan, aiming to offer more diverse travel options and elevate overall service experience, making rail travel a preferred choice for Michigan's residents and visitors.
Existing intercity passenger rail corridors
MDOT received three separate grants from the Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) Corridor Identification and Development (Corridor ID) Program to create Service Development Plans to improve on-time performance and increase the frequency of its three existing intercity passenger rail services.
Pere Marquette
New passenger rail connection consideration
The program also will consider the feasibility of an additional east-west intrastate passenger rail route connecting Holland, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Ann Arbor, and Detroit. MDOT plans to finish planning this potential new service following FRA's Corridor ID requirements and aims to apply for a future Corridor ID opportunity.

Progress timeline title
The Blue Water, Pere Marquette, and Wolverine intercity passenger rail services are now moving through the FRA’s Corridor ID Program, which is the federal process for developing new or expanded passenger rail services and prioritizing projects that are necessary to implement those services for future potential competitive federal funding opportunities.
* National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requires federal agencies to assess the environmental impacts of their proposed actions before making decisions. It ensures that environmental factors are considered and provides opportunities for public review and comment.
