Intelligent Transportation Systems
Intelligent Transportation Systems
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is a combination of electronics, telecommunications and information technology to the transportation sector for improving safety and travel times on the transportation system. It is not highways only, but includes all modes of transportation.
There is no single accepted definition of ITS, or telematics (two-way communication between the vehicle and the outside world), in part because the discipline is still young and evolving. ITS is a combination of electronics, telecommunications and information technology to the transportation sector for improving safety and travel times on the transportation system. It is not highways only, but includes all modes of transportation.
The concepts included within ITS also are evolving, although there are now a number of them established that are giving definition to the discipline.

Staking request
ITS, traffic signals, roadway lighting, and other electrical infrastructure are not on MISS DIG.
Contractors must submit a Staking request (Form 5300) five (5) working days before digging in/near MDOT right of way.
Transportation Operations Centers (TOCs)
Transportation Operations Centers (TOCs) are seven-day-a-week operation centers that house dispatchers from MDOT and Michigan State Police, which allows both agencies to share resources and information to monitor traffic and manage incident responses on Michigan freeways. This is achieved by monitoring traffic sensors, distress calls and video feeds from closed-circuit TV cameras, while coordinating with law enforcement agencies and other transportation officials.
MDOT’s Statewide Transportation Operations Center (STOC), West Michigan Transportation Operations Center (WMTOC), and Southeast Michigan Transportation Operations Center (SEMTOC) are focused on advancing the mission of improving safety, mobility, and economy for residents and business, by ensuring safe, smooth, and efficient roads.
