A request to purchase MDOT-owned railroad property can be made to MDOT Real Estate by submitting either a written request or an Application to Purchase MDOT-owned Railroad Property (Form 0609). All such requests should include a detailed description of the requested acquisition area. MDOT does not grant permanent rights on state owned property (easements).
Submit an Instructions for Completing Application to Use MDOT-controlled Freight Railroad Property (Form 0772) to MDOT's Office of Rail. A request should be accompanied by the appropriate fee and a detailed description of the requested area.

The length or width of railroad corridors can vary greatly from one area to the next.
MDOT owns hundreds of miles of Michigan railroad corridor, but does not own all of the railroad corridors in the state.
Permit applications (Form 0772 or Form 1444 for Michigan Line) are most appropriate when the request is for a public utility or a specific need, such as right of entry or for construction access. Requests for longer term access or property rights will require an application (Form 0609) for a license or sale. MDOT does not grant permanent rights on state owned property (easements).
