Project background:
The removal of the McClellan Avenue overpass is necessary for various reasons. Opened in 1956, the bridge has never been rebuilt. It has been closed since March due to continued deterioration that poses a risk to the public.
In addition, the bridge needs to be removed due to the upcoming reconfiguration of the I-94/Gratiot Avenue interchange. The outdated interchange will be brought up to modern design standards for safety, replacing the existing loop ramps with traditional diamond-style exit and entrance ramps. Due to its proximity to Gratiot Avenue, the existing McClellan Avenue overpass presents clearance issues for high-profile vehicles that will be using the new ramps.
Public comment:
MDOT continues to seek public participation and welcomes input. Comments can be submitted via e-mail at MDOT-I94Detroit@Michigan.gov and in person at the public meeting.
