MDOT online survey seeks public input on upcoming I-475 corridor improvements in Genesee County

DAVISON, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is inviting the public to participate in a survey now until Oct. 1 to provide feedback on proposed aesthetic concepts to convert the 2nd Street bridge over I-475 in Flint to a pedestrian-only structure. This conversion is part of future improvements planned along the middle and south segments of I-475 from the Flint River to Bristol Road in Genesee County.

Funding for this project is made possible by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan program to rebuild the state highways and bridges that are critical to the state's economy and carry the most traffic. The investment strategy is aimed at fixes that result in longer useful lives and improves the condition of the state's infrastructure.

Background:
The I-475 corridor improvements project started with a $300 million investment from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan bond program to rebuild approximately 8 miles of I-475. As the development process began, MDOT heard the community’s concerns about I-475 and the desire to improve the local facilities as a part of the project.

To address these comments and concerns, MDOT initiated a planning and environmental linkages (PEL) study. One of the findings in the PEL was the need for improved connectivity between communities on both the east and west sides of I-475. As discussed in previous I-475 virtual presentations on Oct. 5, 2023, and Aug. 1, 2024, MDOT is planning to convert the 2nd Street bridge over I-475 to a pedestrian-only facility to improve connectivity. The public is being asked to provide feedback on three proposed aesthetic concepts in the survey: a courtyard, a whimsical community space and a light tunnel design.
