KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and contractor Hoffman Bros. Inc. have completed the expansion of M-43 (West Main Street) between Drake Road and US-131 in Kalamazoo, and all lanes and ramps are expected to reopen on Monday, Sept 15.
This $7.8 million investment included repaving West Main Street; adding one westbound lane from Drake Road to US-131; rebuilding the Maple Hill Drive intersection; storm water drainage; concrete curb, gutter and sidewalk; signs; signals and pavement markings. Based on economic modeling, this investment directly and indirectly supported 74 jobs.
The southbound US-131 exit loop ramp to eastbound West Main Street (Exit 38A) has been removed, and the existing ramp to westbound West Main Street (Exit 38B) has been expanded to include a left turn for eastbound traffic.
A new ramp for westbound West Main Street traffic is open to southbound US-131, eliminating the previous weave-merge loop ramp.
The West Main Street traffic signal at 10th Street has been upgraded to include a left-turn phase.
Project completion was delayed by complications with utility relocations. There still are some items to complete, such as permanent sign placement, restoration and cleanup, but there is minimal disruption expected for motorists and pedestrians.
