GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - In partnership with the Kent County Road Commission, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is removing barrels and work zone signs to open all lanes and ramps on US-131 from 76th Street to 100th Street in Byron Township. This two-year, $70 million investment also included adding weave/merge lanes between the 76th Street and 84th Street interchanges. This extends and connects the on ramps to the off ramps between the two interchanges in each direction of US-131.
Crews will be back in the spring to install new traffic signals on 84th Street at the southbound US-131 ramps, plant trees and install final pavement markings.
"Rebuilding this segment of US-131 for the first time in almost 70 years is further proof that we need to continue investing in Michigan's infrastructure," said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. "It benefits everyone that relies on our roads and bridges to be safe and efficient."
The majority of the funding for this project has been made possible by Gov. Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan program to rebuild the state highways and bridges that are critical to the state's economy and carry the most traffic. The investment strategy is aimed at fixes that result in longer useful lives and improves the condition of the state's infrastructure.
