First year of I-94 rebuilding project in Berrien County nearing completion
October 21, 2024
Fast facts:
- Work to rebuild 8.5 miles of I-94 and four bridges, as well as repair nine other bridges, between Puetz Road and Britain Avenue in Berrien County began in early March.
- This year's work from Puetz Road to Washington Avenue, including rebuilding the I-94 interchange at Red Arrow Highway, is nearing completion.
- The three-year, $205 million investment is funded in part by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Rebuilding Michigan program.
COLOMA, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is nearing completion of the first year of a three-year, $205 million investment on I-94 in Berrien County. Red Arrow Highway will be closed at I-94 from Tuesday, Oct. 22, through Wednesday, Oct. 30, while crews set beams for the eastbound I-94 bridge over Red Arrow Highway and finishing rebuilding Red Arrow Highway under I-94.
During the closure, northbound Red Arrow Highway traffic will be detoured on eastbound Marquette Woods Road, northbound Cleveland Avenue and westbound Glenlord Road. Southbound traffic will be detoured via southbound I-94, Exit 22, and eastbound John Beers Road.
The eastbound I-94 ramps at Red Arrow Highway Exit 23 are closed until mid-November.
While 2024 work was planned for mid-November completion, work has been delayed by issues with bridge beam fabrication. MDOT and its contractors still are aiming to complete the work this year.
Work in 2025 will include rebuilding westbound I-94 from Washington Avenue to Empire Avenue and the westbound I-94 bridge over Pipestone Road. There will be two lanes of I-94 open in each direction, and Pipestone Road traffic will be detoured on M-139 and Napier Avenue.
Traffic will move to the newly built westbound I-94 lanes in 2026, when the eastbound lanes and bridge over Pipestone Road will be rebuilt.
Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 2,911 jobs.
Funding in part for this investment is made possible by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan program to rebuild the state highways and bridges that are critical to the state's economy and carry the most traffic. The investment strategy is aimed at fixes that result in longer useful lives and improve the condition of the state's infrastructure.
