MDOT extends public comment period for draft active transportation plan
May 15, 2025
GAYLORD, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has extended the public comment period for the draft North Region Active Transportation Plan, which will highlight current and proposed nonmotorized connections throughout the northern 21 counties of the Lower Peninsula.
Originally open for 30 days of public comment, the current draft of the plan will be available for an additional two weeks until May 31, 2025. Once the comment period has concluded, the document will undergo additional formatting and finalization for distribution.
"We have received a lot of very helpful comments so far, and we just want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to share their thoughts on what this plan should include," said MDOT North Region Planner Heidi Phaneuf.
The Northeast Michigan Council of Governments (NEMCOG) and Networks Northwest have been working with the MDOT North Region Active Transportation Committee, which includes representatives from several communities and organizations, to develop the North Region Active Transportation Plan. The plan will assemble both current and future separated pathways, bike lanes, wide shoulders, sidewalk connections and regional trails that provide a safe place for residents and visitors to walk or bike, increasing opportunities for improved health and wellbeing, access to recreational areas throughout northern lower Michigan, and alternative forms of transportation to get to major destinations.
A copy of the plan can be downloaded from the NEMCOG website.
