US-131 closures in Kalamazoo start Aug. 8 for bridge beam setting

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - As part of the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) project to expand the US-131 interchange at US-131 Business Route (BR) in Kalamazoo, northbound US-131 will be closed from H Avenue to US-131 BR for three consecutive weekends while crews set beams for the new US-131 BR ramp bridge: 10 p.m. Friday - 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8-11, 15-18, and 22-25.

Traffic will be detoured on US-131 BR and the Douglas Avenue interchange.

“Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely,” said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. “By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs without raising taxes by a dime. This year, let's build on our momentum to pass a bipartisan local road funding plan so we can keep fixing our damn roads and creating good-paying, local jobs.”

US-131 BR was originally completed in 1964. This expansion project is made possible by funding secured by Michigan Sen. Sean McCann and Rep. Julie Rogers, as well as former U.S. Congressman Fred Upton.

Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 181 jobs.
