Restore I-94 project: Ramp work begins at I-94/M-39 (Southfield Freeway) interchange with closures

DEARBORN, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation's (MDOT) Restore94 project to repair and rebuild I-94 between I-275 and US-12 (Michigan Avenue) at the Dearborn/Detroit border will resume with work beginning at the I-94/M-39 (Southfield Freeway) interchange in early March and continuing throughout the 2026 construction season.

Work at the I-94/M-39 interchange, which began last fall, will include resurfacing the ramp/bridge surfaces, railing and beam patching, bridge approach replacement, epoxy overlay and replacing bridge bearings. This interchange was originally built in the mid-1980s and carries approximately 20,000 vehicles a day.

During work, most of the I-94/M-39 interchange ramps will be closing, along with lane closures on M-39 and I-94.

Beginning 9 a.m. Monday, March 2 - Fall 2026:

  •          Northbound M-39 (Southfield Freeway) will have lane closures from Allen Road to I-94.
  •          The northbound M-39 (Southfield Freeway) ramp to westbound I-94 will be closed.
    •    Detour: Continue north past I-94, then take Exit 6 to eastbound US-12 (Michigan Avenue) and southbound Greenfield Road to westbound I-94.
  •          Southbound M-39 (Southfield Freeway) will have lane closures from Outer Drive to I-94.
  •          The southbound M-39 (Southfield Freeway) ramp to eastbound I-94 will be closed.
    •    Detour: Southbound M-39 traffic heading for eastbound I-94 will be detoured via Exit 7 to eastbound M-153 (Ford Road)/McGraw Avenue and southbound Weir Street to eastbound I-94.
  •          Eastbound and westbound I-94 will have lane closures at M-39 (Southfield Freeway) for bridge work overhead.

Beginning 9 a.m. Friday, March 6 - Fall 2026:

  •          The southbound M-39 (Southfield Freeway) ramp to westbound I-94 will be closed.
    •    Southbound M-39 traffic heading for westbound I-94 will be detoured via Exit 7 to eastbound M-153 (Ford Road), then southbound Wyoming Avenue and westbound US-12 (Michigan Avenue) to westbound I-94.

These detours were selected due to a number of factors, including other construction happening on alternate roads, the distance of the detour route, driving through downtowns, etc., which would add more time to the detour route.

MDOT is investing $353 million along almost 13 miles of I-94 in Metro Detroit with a variety of work, including rebuilding and realigning the roadway, building a new interchange at Ecorse Road, concrete repairs/patching, bridge work, ramp work, lighting improvements, cable barrier work, improved drainage and intelligent transportation system upgrades.

Two lanes of I-94 are expected to be open in each direction between I-275 and US-12 (Michigan Avenue) for a majority of this multi-year project. However, drivers should expect many ramp closures.
