MDOT opens some roadways closed during late June flooding, continues repairs on others
July 13, 2026
Fast facts:
- Several portions of M-119 in Emmet County and M-88 and M-66 in Antrim County were damaged and closed following an extreme rainfall event on June 29. An estimated 5 to 7 inches of rain fell in a few hours, leading to flooding and washouts as drainage systems were overwhelmed.
- A video news release documented the extent of the damage.
- MDOT reminds all drivers to respect barricades and closure notices.
GAYLORD, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has been able to repair and reopen several portions of roadway that were damaged during flooding on June 29, while other roadways remain closed.
Roads that have been repaired and reopened (all in Antrim County) include:
- M-66 at Lilak Creek: Temporarily repaired and reopened. Traffic is crossing the culvert on a gravel surface until paving can be done.
- M-88 just west of Central Lake: Repaired and reopened.
- M-88 at Coulter Creek: Temporarily repaired and reopened. Traffic is crossing the culvert on a gravel surface until paving can be done.
- M-88 at Eastport Creek: One lane of alternating traffic with a temporary traffic signal.
Roads with remaining closures:
- M-88 remains closed at Wilkinson Creek east of Eastport, Antrim County. Traffic between M-88 and US-31 is being detoured via Ellsworth Road and Atwood Road. Most of the detoured segment of M-88 is accessible to local traffic from local roadways.
- M-119 is closed at Devil’s Elbow and north of South Lamkin Road, Emmet County, due to washouts.
Additionally, M-119 remains closed at two locations in Emmet Country after flooding damage in April:
- Near Division Road due to a culvert failure and washout. Traffic is detoured on Island View Road and North State Road. No firm timeline for repairs to that section is known at this time. The road is expected to remain closed until summer 2027.
- From West Stutsmanville Road to Terpening Road due to a slope failure. MDOT is investing $300,000 to stabilize the slope beneath a section of M-119 near West Stutsmanville Road, between Harbor Springs and Good Hart, that was damaged in spring flooding. Traffic is detoured via Terpening Road, Townline Road and Robinson Road. Most of the closed M-119 segment is accessible to residents and local traffic but there are a few spots where the road is completely closed. Drivers heading from Harbor Springs to Good Hart or further north need to follow the detour route.
Last week’s edition of the Talking Michigan Transportation podcast features conversations about the storm damage and impacts with State Sen. John Damoose (Harbor Springs), who represents the area, and MDOT North Region Associate Region Engineer Bill Wahl.
The public is encouraged to check Michigan.gov/Drive for updated state road closures (I, M and US routes) and detour information. Drive with caution in these areas. Please respect all barricades and road closure notices. Find an alternate route.
