Public transportation

The Office of Passenger Transportation (OPT) administers MDOT's passenger transportation programs, including local transit, intercity bus, and for-hire passenger regulation, to provide a safe and balanced statewide network of passenger transportation services to meet the social, safety, and economic well-being of the state.  

Program Administration Section
The Program Administration Section is responsible for coordinating the administration of local and intercity bus activities within the Comprehensive Transportation Fund for OPT. In addition, the section administers the department's motor bus and limousine credentialing duties and safety responsibilities prescribed by Michigan statues for OPT. 

Transportation Services Section
The Transportation Services Section of OPT provides assistance and oversight to over 135 public transit service providers, rideshare/vanpool providers, and passenger marine.

Mobility Innovation
The mobility innovation staff implements and coordinates projects to demonstrate the feasibility of emerging technology and innovation to improve the equity, accessibility and efficiency of public transit.
