As members of the Coordinated School Health Team (CSHT), the students will assess their school environment using the Healthy School Action Tool and develop a plan to make changes in the school environment so that all students have opportunities to eat healthy, be physically active and be tobacco-free. They will lead by example through positive health behaviors and take a leadership role to create excitement and success among student action teams at other schools. They will also generate information that can be used to create a replicable model to extend to other Michigan schools in communities with racial and ethnic disparities.
Schools with grades 6-8 from a select group of the Governor's eight Cities of Promise (Detroit, Highland Park, Hamtramck, Pontiac, Benton Harbor, Flint, Saginaw, Muskegon Heights) are participating in this three-year project that will empower and support student action teams (SATs), under the guidance of community mentor teams (CMTs).
