Specialty Behavioral Health Services
Michigan Medicaid beneficiaries deserve access to behavioral health care services when and where they need them. A new initiative will bring consumer choice, and increased access to services while preserving the Community Mental Health providers many Medicaid beneficiaries go to for behavioral health care services today.
MDHHS plans to issue a request for proposals (RFP) for Pre-Paid Inpatient Health Plans (PIHPs) the summer of 2025 with the goal of a service start date Oct. 1, 2026.
PIHPs are responsible for making sure people receive the behavioral health services and supports they need and manage the network of behavioral health care providers including Community Mental Health Service Providers and behavioral health providers.
Through a competitive procurement process, MDHHS will select PIHPs to contract with the state to provide managed care functions for the specialty behavioral health services.
