Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) is a free nutrition education and physical activity promotion program funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) for children, youth, and adults who receive or are eligible to receive SNAP benefits.
Michigan's SNAP-Ed is a state-wide program that provides nutrition education and promotes physical activity to increase the likelihood that persons eligible for SNAP will make healthy food choices within a limited budget and choose healthy lifestyles. In Michigan, SNAP is also referred to as the Food Assistance Program (FAP).
We oversee the administration of the statewide SNAP-Ed program by ensuring delivery of a variety of approaches for effective, evidence-based nutrition education and physical activity promotion to improve eating and lifestyle behaviors as a preventative approach to reducing diet-related health problems.
SNAP-Ed is delivered in a variety of settings including child care sites, pre-schools, schools, summer meal sites, worksites, faith faith-based organizations, senior centers, farmer's markets, retail food stores, and emergency food distribution sites.
We have oversight responsibilities for the SNAP-Ed programs for the state of Michigan to ensure that programming is effective and follows the SNAP-Ed guidance and approved State Plan of Work. MDHHS partners with two implementing agencies, the Michigan Fitness Foundation (MFF) and Michigan State University Extension (MSUE). MFF oversees the Michigan Nutrition Network (MNN) which creates innovative partnerships with organizations across the state in order to reach as many of the state's SNAP recipients as possible. MSUE provides statewide nutrition education through their extension staff and other community partners.
