Physicians who are required to complete medical certifications for a deceased patient, and who have actual knowledge of the presence of “infectious agents” in a deceased individual, are required to report that information to the funeral director. MCL 333.2843b. MDHHS establishes the definition of “infectious agent” by administrative rule. As of April 28, 2020, “infectious agent” was updated by emergency rule to include COVID-19.
To facilitate timely, ongoing updates to the definition of “infectious agent,” MDHHS is currently in the process of amending administrative rule R. 325.9031. Once this change is completed, the list of infectious agents will be updated and published on this website. This list will be updated as necessary.
