The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) now provides 12 months of continuous postpartum Medicaid coverage, in an effort to reduce postpartum morbidity and mortality in Michigan. This extension is effective April 1, 2022 and continues regardless of any changes in circumstances such as income. Extended postpartum Medicaid coverage includes full benefits, such as physical and behavioral health services, substance use disorder treatment, dental care and more. This has been achieved through an approved State Plan Amendment as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 H.R.1319, extended postpartum coverage will increase access to health care coverage and ensure continuity of care during this important period.
