High Blood Cholesterol
Cholesterol awareness questions are included on the Michigan Behavioral Risk Factor Survey on odd-numbered years. This includes two questions:
- Blood cholesterol is a fatty substance found in the blood. About how long has it been since you last had your blood cholesterol checked?
- Have you ever been told by a doctor, nurse or other health professional that your blood cholesterol is high?
The most recent results for Michigan can be found on page 18 at the following link: Michigan 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Annual Report or in the 2019 Michigan Behavioral Risk Factor Survey Selected Tables.
Additional data about cholesterol is available through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at www.cdc.gov/cholesterol/maps_data.htm.

Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity
The Michigan Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (MiBRFSS) is composed of annual, state-level telephone surveys of Michigan residents, aged 18 years and older. This is a main data source for physical activity, nutrition, and weight status.
- Interactive Dashboard
- Annual Reports
- Regional and Local Health Department Tables
- Race/Ethnicity Tables
The national Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) consists of annual surveys (i.e., BRFS) conducted independently by the states, District of Columbia, and U.S. territories, and is coordinated through cooperative agreements with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The Michigan Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System or PRAMS is a project that, with help from our partners at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gathers high-quality, population-based data about maternal attitudes and experiences before, during and after pregnancy. With the data collected from this survey, we can help improve the health of mothers and their babies throughout the State of Michigan.
The Michigan Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program is a supplemental nutrition program that helps women, infants and children through an important time of growth and development. The WIC Data and System Management provides access to system release information, WIC research, reports and system policies. and processes. Maternal WIC Data and Reports provides information including PNSS and PedNSS reports that contain information on the demographic composition and health status of women and health outcomes of infants and children enrolled in the WIC Program and breastfeeding reports.

Evaluation
Program Evaluation
Program evaluation is the systematic collection and analysis of data to examine whether public health activities are achieving their intended outcomes. Evaluation is important, because it helps us improve our programs and spend our resources wisely.
For more information on program evaluation, see the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Program Performance and Evaluation Office website. Materials specific for evaluation of heart disease and stroke prevention can be found on the CDC Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Evaluation Resources webpage.
Evaluation documents produced from our work can be found below.
