Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease. Cavities may lead to pain, discomfort, and hinder the ability to eat and focus in school. Dental sealants are a thin, protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth to help prevent cavities.
A Healthy People 2030 Objective is to increase the proportion of children and adolescents who have dental sealants on 1 or more molars. SEAL! Michigan was founded with the aim of reducing tooth decay among children in Michigan and enhancing the availability of oral health services, especially for kids from low-income households. The program provides no cost dental sealants to families, alongside offering oral health education and resources for establishing a dental home. The SEAL! Michigan program increases access to dental sealants by providing sealants within a school setting and is supported by MDHHS and the Delta Dental Foundation.
