MI AIM and Maternal Levels of Care
AIM Patient Safety Bundles
Since 2015, Michigan partnered with the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM) to support safer maternity care practices across the state. Patient Safety Bundles are simple, proven practices that help hospitals improve care for pregnant and postpartum mothers. More specifically, Patient Safety Bundles are step-by-step guides that are based on science for hospitals and health care providers to follow in various emergency situations. Michigan AIM (MI AIM) birthing hospitals are currently using patient safety bundles to address:
- Obstetric Hemorrhage (severe vaginal bleeding)
- Severe Hypertension in Pregnancy (high blood pressure)
- Maternal Sepsis (serious infections)
- Substance Use Disorder
The bundles can be adapted to different hospital settings regardless of the hospital’s size. The goal is the same everywhere: safer care and better outcomes for mothers and families.
Maternal Levels of Care
Not all hospitals provide maternity care, and not all maternity care is the same. Michigan is participating in a program called Maternal Levels of Care Verification to help make sure pregnant women receive care at the right place for their specific needs. This program supports Michigan hospitals to voluntarily check the level of maternity care they are providing.
There are a total of four (4) Maternal Levels of Care:
- Level I: Hospitals offer routine maternity care before, during and after birth for most healthy pregnancies.
- Level II: Hospitals offer maternity care for women who have some health risks or complications. They have specialists and additional equipment or resources available.
- Level III: Hospitals offer maternity care for even more high-risk pregnancies and have specialists available at all times. They are equipped to handle emergencies and can provide care for more complex pregnancies and deliveries.
- Level IV: Large hospitals that offer the most complex maternity care for moms and babies. They have advanced specialists available and can care for patients with high-risk pregnancies and births.
By participating in voluntary Maternal Levels of Care verification, hospitals demonstrate their commitment to the safety and well-being of moms and babies, and help to reduce severe complications and even deaths.
