Federal Changes to Medicaid and Food Assistance Programs

Medicaid is the nation’s largest provider of health insurance, covering more than 2.6 million Michigan residents. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known the Food Assistance Program (FAP) in Michigan, improves food security and overall well-being for more than 1.4 million low-income individuals. These programs are a cost-efficient means of ensuring those with the greatest need have access to vital health care services and nutrition, and are central to Michigan’s economic well-being. Despite their proven success and efficacy, Congress and the current federal administration are implementing major cuts and restrictions to Medicaid and SNAP programs.
