Symposium on Exploring New Models of Undergraduate Nursing Clinical Education Material

Available data and technology continue to advance at an ever-increasing pace, and healthcare practice is undergoing significant transformation to meet the needs of an aging population including more individuals experiencing chronic illness, disability and insufficient resources.  As healthcare practice shifts from predominantly acute care to more community-based settings, colleges and universities educating health professionals are striving to produce an adequate supply of well-prepared practitioners who in addition to caring for the healthcare needs of the patients they serve will address health equity and social determinants of health to improve the health of the population.  In Michigan, representatives of nursing academia and practice gathered to share and discuss issues and barriers to the clinical education of undergraduate nurses, as well as deliberating best practices and available resources that may be leveraged to redesign nursing clinical education to produce a more evidence-based common vision for the future clinical education of undergraduate nurses. The event included the presentations of some unique clinical placements created in community-based settings and some resources currently being utilized to advance the use of simulation in the education of nurses. This event was the first of several to be held as nursing stakeholders in Michigan develop a common vision for the future of undergraduate nursing clinical education.

Prioritization Results  

Following is the list of potential next steps for this effort to identify a common vision of the future of undergraduate nursing clinical education in Michigan in order of priority given to each by the 49 Symposium attendees who submitted a prioritization list.  There was no significant difference in results for respondents from nursing academia and those representing nursing practice settings; therefore, the information is presented as a single priority list.  The difference in level of priority between each item on the list was small and there was some variance by region, but the number of respondents in the regions with the largest deviation from this list was too small to produce statistically significant regional results.

     (1) Facilitating increased use of non-acute, community-based, and other alternative 
          clinical sites statewide

     (2) Pursuing increased standardization of undergraduate nursing and clinical education
          curricula, which may include competency measurement

     (3) Increase funding support, collaboration, and/or faculty preparation in the planning, 
          implementation and evaluation of simulation

     (4) Facilitate exploration of clinical placements without on-site faculty and/or RN presence
          by using technology to provide needed oversight

     (5) Establish more detailed criteria/guidelines for clinical placements in non-acute care
          settings

     (6) Pursue standard competencies for new areas of curriculum (social determinants of 
          health, population health, workplace violence prevention, mobility and safe 
          patient handling . . .)
