Tips for Optimal Hearing Screening
- Use a standardized training program for screeners.
- Complete no more than 2 screens prior to discharge.
- Always screen both ears. Both ears must yield a pass result in the SAME session to be considered a pass result.
- Collect and document risk factors for late onset hearing loss.
- Provide screeners with scripts for sharing results with families.
- Schedule any needed follow up appointments PRIOR to discharge.
- Have a plan for missed screens, transfers in and out of your hospital, and equipment malfunction.
