Screening & Diagnostic Assessment Referrals
A list of outpatient rescreen and pediatric diagnostic audiology facilities in Michigan by county, including contact information, can be found here: Rescreen and Diagnostic Facilities by County.
Medical Referrals
A child diagnosed as deaf or hard of hearing should receive referrals to appropriate medical specialists such as an otolaryngologist and geneticist. Most children with hearing loss have a genetic component even if they do not have a syndrome or dysmorphic features. Additional medical referrals may need to be made to neurology, cardiology, nephrology, and developmental pediatrics.
In addition, it should be noted that testing for congenital cytomegalovirus should occur within the first twenty-one days of life. After this time, it is hard to determine if the baby contracted the infection through nursing or by exposure to siblings or others who may be passing the virus.
Early Intervention
A child diagnosed as Deaf or Hard of Hearing should receive a referral to Early Intervention: Early On Michigan.
