Dr. Sarah Lyon-Callo, Senior Deputy Director, Public Health Administration
Dr. Sarah Lyon-Callo is the senior deputy director of the Public Health Administration (PHA) for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, an administration that oversees a vast array of public health services in Michigan and coordinates closely with the state’s local health departments.
Dr. Lyon-Callo began her career in governmental public health in 1997, serving as a regional community epidemiologist at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Bureau of Environmental Health before joining MDHHS as an asthma surveillance coordinator in 1998. Since then, she has held several positions related to epidemiology at MDHHS: asthma epidemiologist; section manager for the Chronic Disease Epidemiology Section; asthma investigator; section manager for Surveillance and Program Evaluation; and director of Division of Lifecourse Epidemiology and Genomics. She served as state epidemiologist beginning in 2015, serving as director for the Bureau of Epidemiology and Population Health as well as acting director of the Bureau of Infectious Disease Prevention.
She was appointed to the position in October 2022.
In addition to her masters in epidemiology and biostatistics from University of Massachusetts, she earned her doctorate in epidemiologic science in 2018 from the University of Michigan.
