Department of Community Health Releases Medicaid Bulletin
March 23, 2001
Michigan Department of Community Health Director, James K. Haveman, Jr., today released a Medicaid Policy Bulletin to allow for direct enrollment and reimbursement to Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) operating under the supervision of a qualified physician. The bulletin will take effect on May 1, 2001.
"This policy for the Michigan Medicaid program mirrors what the current practice of reimbursement for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists is under the Medicare program and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan," said Haveman. "This policy continues the fact that Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists are expected to fully comply with Michigan scope of practice licensing laws and regulations."
"By enabling Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists to be directly reimbursed by Medicaid and recognized as anesthesia providers ensures patient access to high quality safe anesthesia care, in particular for those in the medically under-served and rural areas of Michigan," said Mary Golinski, CRNA, MS, past president of the Michigan Association of Nurse Anesthetists. "We look forward to continuing to provide exemplary anesthesia care for all patients in Michigan, as we have done for nearly a century."
