For Immediate Release: September 9, 2011

LANSING - The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) is pleased to announce the appointment of Karla Garcia as Legislative Liaison for MDCH effective Monday, September 26.

Garcia will work on behalf of the Department with members of the Michigan House of Representatives, Michigan Senate, legislative staff, and representatives in Governor Snyder's office.

She replaces Tony Stamas, who left MDCH to become Chief of Staff to Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville.

"Karla Garcia is a strong addition to our team as she has a solid background in health care and public health matters, including Medicaid," said Olga Dazzo, Director of the MDCH. "I know she will be instrumental at MDCH as we move forward in our effort to create a healthier Michigan."

Garcia will have a dual reporting relationship with Director Dazzo and Dick Posthumus, Senior Advisor to the Governor.

"Given Karla's background and experience, she will be a tremendous asset to Governor Snyder's work to reinvent Michigan," said Posthumus.

Garcia comes to MDCH from the office of Representative Bob Genetski where she has served as his Legislative Aide since 2008. Prior to that, Garcia was the Government Relations Manager for TAP/Takeda Pharmaceutical.

She has also worked as the Government and Community Relations Administrator for HealthPlus of Michigan and spent several years as the legislative aide for former Representative Gary Newell while he was chairman of the Community Health Subcommittee.

Garcia earned her Bachelor's Degree in Human Resource Management from Cleary University. She also recently completed her Master of Science in Administration Degree in Health Care Management at Central Michigan University.
