Core Detroit Businesses Pledge to Support MI Healthier Tomorrow
January 30, 2013
LANSING - All across Michigan, businesses, organizations, leaders, and communities are coming together to recognize the serious consequences of obesity and to change Michigan's future. On Wed., Jan. 30, a group of core Detroit businesses announced their support and partnership with the MI Healthier Tomorrow campaign.
"Our partners are critical in the effort to improve the health of our residents," said James K. Haveman, Director of the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH). "We know we cannot do this alone so to see such strong partners take charge in improving the health of our state is absolutely invaluable."
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Compuware, Marketing Associates, and Quicken Loans came together today to announce their commitment and support of the MI Healthier Tomorrow campaign to get Michiganders to pledge to lose 10 percent of their body weight. Particularly in Detroit, where obesity rates are staggeringly high, these new partners will be critical in reducing and preventing the serious implications of the chronic diseases associated with obesity.
There is strong evidence that a 10 percent weight loss is a reasonable and achievable goal that can significantly improve physical and mental health. Currently in Michigan, some 800,000 children and 5 million adults have a weight problem. A 10 percent weight loss for those who are overweight can improve blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels, improve heart health, decrease risk of Type 2 diabetes, and strengthen the immune system. Losing 10 percent also can decrease back and joint pain, improve breathing and sleep, increase energy and stamina and improve mood and self-confidence.
After taking the online pledge, residents who provide a mailing address will receive a free Getting Started Kit that will help guide them on their weight loss journey. Additionally, those who provide an email or mobile phone number can sign up for healthy texts and/or emails with motivational messages, reminders, tips, and recipes to help keep them focused on losing weight and becoming healthier.
