Tax check-off protects Michigan children from abuse and neglect

Remember the Michigan Children’s Trust Fund when you file your state taxes

Lansing, Mich. April 9, 2015 – Throughout April Michiganders are learning more about the various ways people and communities throughout the state are working to help protect our children from abuse and neglect. One effective way Michigan taxpayers can help is by remembering the Children’s Trust Fund of Michigan (CTF). More information about the tax campaign is available here.

“Next Wednesday, April 15, is the deadline for filing your state income taxes. It also presents an easy and effective way to support our mission to prevent child abuse and neglect,” said Mike Foley, executive director of the Michigan Children’s Trust Fund. “Our goal this year is to raise at least $100,000 from this tax check-off so this important fund-raising option continues to be available for the Children’s Trust Fund.”

All funds raised through this check-off go directly to efforts to protect Michigan children. It is No. 6 on the Michigan Voluntary Contributions Schedule. A gift through the check-off program makes a big difference in the life of a child at risk for abuse and neglect. It’s been proven that a child’s experiences have a direct link to their health and well being in adulthood. Investing in children early in their life is key to helping them have a successful future.

As other worthwhile programs have been added as options to the check-off program, revenues have declined from this funding source. Any of the charitable options on Michigan’s tax form that do not reach the $100,000 threshold two years in a row are in danger of being removed from the form. At its peak, the tax check off provided $300,000 to the Michigan Children’s Trust Fund. Last year, it brought in just under $80,000. However, the check-off program remains a very important financial resource for CTF. At the end of March 2015 approximately $36,000 had been raised from the check-off.

The Children’s Trust Fund derives its funding from several sources including federal funding from Community-Based Grants for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (CBCAP), investment income, annual fundraiser auction, money raised from CTF specialty license plates, the tax check-off and some miscellaneous sources.

Since 1985, April has been nationally recognized as Child Abuse Prevention Month. A key post-April event for CTF is the 13th Annual Pam Posthumus Auction, which takes place this year on May 13, 2015. Contact CTF at 517-373-4320 for more information. Learn more about becoming a sponsor or table host or donating to a live auction here.

CTF, currently housed in the Michigan Department of Human Services, serves as a voice for Michigan’s children and families and promotes their health, safety and welfare by funding effective local programs and services that prevent child abuse and neglect. Since 1982, CTF has generated more than $60 million to support prevention programs and services in communities. Additionally, CTF funds 73 local child abuse and neglect prevention councils that serve all of Michigan's 83 counties and administers more than 20 community-based direct service grants across the state, including childhood development programs, respite care and home visitation programs.
