LANSING, Mich. – Community Action Agency South Central Michigan has been selected as interim provider for the Kalamazoo County service area effective Jan. 1.
This action by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Bureau of Community Action and Economic Opportunity came following a request for proposals issued after the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 4 rescinded the designation of the Kalamazoo County Community Action Agency and returned administration of its funds to the state. MDHHS received three proposals.
The goal of Community Action agencies is to reduce the causes, conditions and effects of poverty and promote social and economic opportunities that foster self-sufficiency for low-income persons. There are 29 Community Action agencies in Michigan.
The interim provider will absorb staff members and fundamental programs that are serving Kalamazoo in the Community Action capacity.
Community Action Agency South Central Michigan serves Barry, Calhoun, St Joseph and Branch counties with multiple grant sources, including the Community Services Block Grant and Weatherization Assistance Program that both are administered by the Bureau of Community Action and Economic Opportunity.
“Our goal is to provide a seamless transition of services to the Kalamazoo community,” said Matt Lori, senior deputy director of Policy, Planning and Legislative Services for MDHHS. “It’s important that Kalamazoo County residents have access to quality services to help them move to self-sufficiency.”
