Hepatitis B

Key Points:

  • Getting tested with a simple blood test is the only way to know if you have hepatitis B.
  • You should get tested for hepatitis B at least once in your life, but people with ongoing risk need periodic testing.
  • If you find out you have hepatitis B, talk to your health care provider about treatment options.
  • Vaccination is the best way to prevent infection.

Hepatitis B is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It spreads when blood and body fluids infected with HBV enter the body of someone who is not infected. Infection can range from mild (lasting a few weeks) to a serious, chronic illness. You can have hepatitis B even if you do not look or feel sick. Left untreated, hepatitis B can cause serious liver problems, including scarring and cancer.

Getting vaccinated is the best way to prevent hepatitis B. The vaccine is safe and effective and available for infants, children, and adults.

There is treatment for hepatitis B. If you are diagnosed with hepatitis B, treatment will depend on whether you have acute or chronic hepatitis B, the health of your liver, and the medications that are available. Talk to your health care provider about the best treatment options for you.
