NHSN - Enroll

Enrollment in the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN)

Enrollment in the NHSN is through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Healthcare facilities wishing to enroll in NHSN should go to the CDC website for NHSN enrollment information.

Enrollment Resources by Facility Type

Acute Care Hospitals/Facilities 
Enrollment for acute care or other short-term stay facilities (e.g. critical access facilities, oncology facilities, military/VA facilities.

Ambulatory Surgery Centers
Enrollment for outpatient surgery centers.

Long-term Acute Care Facilities
Enrollment for long-term acute care hospitals (LTACs).

Long-term Care Facilities
Enrollment for nursing homes, assisted living and residential care, chronic care facilities and skilled nursing facilities.

Data Use Agreement

Facilities who wish to participate in HAI surveillance with the MDHHS SHARP Unit using NHSN will need to:

  1. Enroll in NHSN (CDC)
  2. Sign an MDHHS SHARP Data Use Agreement * 
    1. To obtain an official copy of the Data Use Agreement, please contact the SHARP Unit at MDHHS-SHARP@michigan.gov.
    2. Original signed copy of the Agreement should be returned to the SHARP Unit. 

* The Agreement describes the purposes of the surveillance and provides assurances of confidentiality of the data. Click here to view a sample copy of the Data Use Agreement

Resources for Users New to NHSN

Presentations from the annual NHSN live training hosted at CDC are recorded and posted as archived videos. You can view presentation on how to identify, report, and analyze VAE, PedVAE, CAUTI, CLABSI, Secondary Bloodstream Infection (BSI) and Site-Specific Infections, SSI, MRSA Bacteremia and C. difficile LabID events, as well as presentations on validation of healthcare-associated infection data and data quality, reporting and analysis of antibiotic use and resistance data, the Outpatient Procedure Component (OPC), and information on the upcoming NHSN Neonatal Component.
